Open Science is a collaborative, transparent, and accessible approach to research, involving a structural change in the way research is conceived, and executed, and its results disseminated. It encompasses not only the opening up of publications but also research data, methodologies, processes, digital infrastructures and services, as well as citizen involvement in a context of responsible research and innovation.

In accordance with Objective 19 of the 2020-2026 Strategic Plan, the Universidade de Vigo is committed to Open Science through a set of actions to be developed by 2026.

The regulatory framework, both national and European, also lays down the path to follow in the coming years. Therefore, UVigo sets the following objectives to implement the Open Science model:

  1. Achieve full open access to scientific publications.
  2. Promote the creation of a system of infrastructures and human support services that facilitate the publication of data in a FAIR system (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) in trusted repositories.
  3. Advocate for a qualitative and quantitative evaluation system that recognises the diversity of research results and Open Science practices.
  4. Implement the knowledge and practice of Open Science principles by research staff, research support units, and library staff.
  5. Manage and ensure compliance with the recommendations and actions established by organisations to progress towards Open Science.

Publishing in open access

Publishing in open access journals or repositories has multiple advantages for researchers: gaining more visibility and impact, retaining rights to their work, publishing articles in open access without cost, and meeting funding agency requirements. For institutions and society, open access reflects the research activity of the university, promotes innovation, and facilitates transparency and accountability for public investment in research.

The University Library has signed agreements with several academic publishers to publish in open access with discounts or funding support for publication fees for these articles.
