CiGUS Network

The network called Rede de Centros de Investigación do Sistema Universitario de Galicia (Rede CiGUS) is a superstructure promoted by the Xunta de Galicia regional government aimed at strengthening research excellence.

It is made up of centres that have the CiGUS identification seal, which guarantees the quality and impact of their research. This seal seeks to promote these centres as benchmarks in their scientific field and to strengthen the Galician university research system in order to attract and retain the best research talent and gain competitiveness at national and European level. The centres of the Universidade de Vigo that belong to the CiGUS Network are atlanTTic, CINBIO and CIM.

In 2024, the category of collaborative research centre was created for those centres that have not yet obtained accreditation of excellence but are on the way to achieving it. At the UVigo, Cintecx and Ecobas have this consideration.

The Xunta de Galicia, through competitive calls, assesses and classifies these research centres and assigns them funding according to their rating. For this assessment, requirements are established such as the constitution of a steering committee, made up of the secretary general of Universities, the Rector, the manager, the vice-rector responsible for research and a representative of the Social Council, in addition to the management of the centre.

Another requirement is the formation of an external advisory committee of experts matched to the international standards required for this type of collegiate body, whose members are approved by the steering committee. This committee plays a fundamental role in the evolution of the research centre, as it is responsible for assessing its development, strategy, and management, as well as the research groups that make it up. It also issues its assessment and recommendations to the steering committee, which is responsible for analysing them and making decisions based on the reports issued.
