Curriculum Vitae
My scientific career began with a bachelor's thesis in 1986 in population genetics at the University of the Basque Country and a master's degree from the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza and the University of Lleida in plant breeding and seed production, and continued with a doctoral thesis at the University of Santiago de Compostela (1992) and a postdoctoral stay at the University of Wisconsin (1993-4). My lines of research have been maize breeding for food quality and tolerance to stress and management of plant genetic resources and, secondarily, breeding for adaptation and agronomic value and tolerance to pests and diseases. In recent decades, I am focusing on a line of maize breeding for drought tolerance in which we already identify sources of drought tolerance and response mechanisms in maize, and we are studying genetic regulation and physiological processes involved in the tolerance of corn to heat and drought. The results of these investigations have been published in 150 scientific articles, 7 technical articles, 14 book chapters and 30 popular articles, as well as various congresses, conferences and seminars. I have also contributed to 6 varietal registrations. These works have been financed by 39 national, international and regional research projects and 7 contracts with institutions and companies. I have also carried out training activities for research personnel (post-doctorate, graduate and undergraduate) and technicians and I have collaborated in scientific dissemination at school, university and professional level. In the area of management, I have been director of the Biological Mission of Galicia for four years, and deputy director for eight years.
